False Criminal Impersonation Charge
Interesting legal story about a mistaken criminal impersonation charge against an illegal immigrant in Madison.
The man was originally arrested on Tennessee criminal impersonation charges for showing a legitimate individual taxpayer ID card. The arresting officer apparently had mistakenly believed it to be a fake social security card.
As an illegal immigrant, the defendant was presumably trying to follow the law by getting such a tax ID card, and paying legal taxes as required.
Criminal impersonation is a common offense among undocumented workers, when they use a false social security number when applying for a job.
Unfortunately, just by being mistakenly arrested, this man has incurred problems with the federal government and ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement). Davidson county participates in programs to help enforce federal immigration law.
