Clarksville TN Man Falsely Reports Shooting

On Wednesday afternoon Clarksville dispatch received a 911 call from Derrick Da’Von Thompson claiming he had been shot in his home. The man stated he heard gunshots outside of his home and that he then realized he had been shot. Interestingly, he said there was no blood and he wasn’t sure where he was injured.

When police responded to the home Thompson would not come to the door, claiming he could not feel his legs.  Police broke into the home to find Thompson on the floor upstairs with no visible injuries. A small amount of marijuana was found next to him and it was determined that he had not, in fact, been shot at all.

Derrick Thompson is now facing criminal charges of false reporting and simple possession of marijuana. It is not clear from this Tennessean report of Thompson’s call was a result of intoxication by marijuana or a prank.

False reporting is considered a felony and Mr. Thompson could be looking at several years in the custody of the Tennessee Department of Corrections. Simple possession of marijuana, however, is a far less serious charge.

Simple possession is considered a Class A misdemeanor. While this carries a potential sentence of up to 1 year in jail, the sentence is rarely that severe. However, if this is Thompson’s second offense of marijuana possession he could face a Class E felony charge for it. Class E felony possession of marijuana carries a potential 6 year sentence and hefty fines.

There is no doubt this Clarksville man is rethinking his prank and his marijuana habit. Being caught with marijuana is a big deal regardless of the amount, simply because it is a criminal charge.

Facing possession charges should always be done with the assistance of an experienced defense attorney. If you are up against charges like these, call me to discuss the details of your case.
